The Pensions Trust's New Directors

Issued: 7 May 2004

The Pensions Trust is pleased to announce the election of a new Chair of the Board of Directors and four new directors to the Board, plus the re-election of the Deputy Chair. The newly elected Directors are:

  • John Alleston (Chair)
  • Clare Smith (Deputy Chair)
  • Lynda Howe (Employer Nominated Director)
  • Richard Marshall (Employer Nominated Director)
  • Bruce Nelson (Member Nominated Director)
  • David Prince (Member Nominated Director)

These elections follow the retirement of Chair Andrew Cooke (Employer Nominated), George Gray (Employer Nominated), Ian Roylance (Member Nominated) and John Wheatley (Member Nominated).

John Alleston, who has been elected as Chair of the Board of Directors, brings a wealth of relevant experience. He also serves as the Chairman of Housing 21 Trust and has served on the Boards of a number of housing associations. Commenting on his election, John said: "This election is a great honour. We are facing difficult times in the pensions world, especially for our members who are mostly on very modest incomes. The Pensions Trust will certainly do its best for them."

John has been a Director of The Pensions Trust since 1999. He has chaired both the Audit and Compliance Committee and the Investment Committee and is also on the Remuneration and Appointments Committee. Before he retired, John was Administration Director of The Guinness Trust (1989-2000). Before that, John worked for Housing Corporation for 13 years, latterly as Registrar. Prior to this he worked for Ford Motor Company in product planning roles and as a consultant specialising in benchmarking.

This is the second year that Clare Smith has been elected as Deputy Chair. Clare is currently Director of Human Resources with Leonard Cheshire as well as being the Chair of a number of national committees. She has worked in Human Resources for over 25 years, much of which has been at director level in both national and international organisations and has experience of a wide range of pension arrangements. Clare has been a Director of The Pensions Trust since 1998 and presently serves on the Audit and Compliance Committee and the Remuneration and Appointments Committee.

Lynda Howe joins us with over 25 years of finance experience. She is currently Finance and IT Director for York Housing Association. Before this, she was an auditor for over 15 years with a special focus on housing associations.

Richard Marshall is already a familiar face to The Pensions Trust having served on the Board of Trustees and Investment Committee (1990-2003) as well as the Chair’s Committee (1991-1999). Richard is a retired Finance Director for the Nuffield Foundation. He is a certified Chartered Accountant and has over 30 years' experience within the charitable sector. We are very fortunate he is re-joining us.

Bruce Nelson is a Chartered Accountant who worked for a number of commercial organisations before taking up a role as Finance Director for The Girls' Day School Trust. This Trust is the largest group of independent day schools in the country and Bruce has full responsibility for all aspects of the Finance and ICT Operations.

David Prince is Accountant at Cheadle Hulme School. Before this he worked for over 25 years on the financial side of the motor trade industry. With 8 years until his own retirement David takes a great interest in pensions and how they will be affecting his future.

We at The Pensions Trust would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new Directors, we are delighted they are joining us. They bring a wealth of experience to the team and we hope to be able to introduce them to our members shortly.
