Three staff from The Pensions Trust formed part of the 49,000 strong crowd that took part in the 24th Great North Run on Sunday 26 September 2004. The race, which is the biggest half marathon in the world, was started by double Olympic gold medal winner Kelly Holmes.
All three completed the 13.1 mile course in impressive times with Phillippa Cockerill finishing in 2 hours 27 minutes, Russell Gardham in 1 hour 47 minutes and Karen Parry in 2 hours 13 minutes. For all three employees it was their first time taking part in an event of this nature, made more remarkable as they had no professional help with their training. Phillippa Cockerill said, "The crowd of well wishers were just wonderful. The support they lent to the runners meant such a lot and really helped to spur us on. Crossing over that finishing line, I felt real achievement and pride."
Phillippa and Karen raised over £415 for the Leukaemia Research Fund while Russell donated his sponsorship money of over £265 to Barnado’s.
