Learning and Development

At The Pensions Trust our aim is to provide an environment whereby all of our employees are encouraged to develop their knowledge and skills to achieve their full potential within their chosen field.
All new employees at the Trust have an initial induction period of six months during this time they will learn not only about their new role, but how it contributes to the strategic goals of the Trust.

The one-to-one appraisal system allows for the continued development of all employees as you will have an opportunity each month to discuss any learning and development needs with your manager.

As part of our continuous learning approach we can support you with other academic qualifications such as:

Pensions Qualifications

There is a wide range of roles within pensions some very technical whilst others are more client focused. Different roles require a different balance of skills but all require a high standard of numerical skill as well as written and spoken English.

All roles within the Trust will require self-motivation, drive and confidence and each of these skills are equally sought after. The culture of the Trust requires strong team working so interpersonal as well as communication skills are required.

The Pensions Management Institute (PMI) is the professional body covering pensions and provides a wide range of qualifications suited to different roles and careers within the pension industry. Most of the qualifications are module based and successful passes earn you credits which you can then take forward towards an industry recognised qualification.

At the Trust we support our employees through the Qualification in Pensions Administration (QPA). The QPA is a work based qualification for pensions assistants and administrators and candidates completing QPA will obtain enough credits to apply for Ordinary Membership of the PMI.

Other Professional Qualifications

Although the main focus of the business is pensions, our Customer Services Team is supported by individuals from a variety of professions who posses qualifications within their own field. If you are successful in gaining a position within a support function the Trust will support you by ensuring your skills are kept up-to-date through qualification and re-qualification, pay for your membership to professional bodies and present opportunities for continuous professional development within your field.

At present there are employees of the Trust who are currently a member of, or are working towards a professional qualification of one of the following:

  • The Pensions Management Institute (PMI)
  • Association of Chartered Accountants (ACCA)
  • Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM)
  • Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD)
  • NVQ in a related field such as Customer Service, Finance, Pensions Administration.

Ongoing Work Based Learning

Upon starting at the Trust your manager will have drawn up an induction for you whereby you are given the opportunity to learn not only your new role but also about the Trust itself. Prior to you starting you will be allocated a buddy who will help you settle into your role and alongside other members of your team will train you in the various tasks within your role.

Training Courses

When you start at the Trust your primary method of learning would be ongoing work based learning. However there may be occasions when you will be asked to attend a training course that will support you in your work. These courses may take place in-house alongside your work colleagues and may also require you to attend a course at an external site.

A Learning Culture

On the job learning and studying towards a professional qualification are only the start. Changes in legislation, technology and business focus ensure that work processes are evolving all the time. No matter what your chosen field is you will have to keep your skills and knowledge up-to-date in order to ensure that you are effective in your role. Outlined above are the ways in which The Pensions Trust can support your development in return we expect that what you have learnt, no matter where you have learned it, becomes a tangible benefit to the Trust.

Work Shadowing

The Trust has a new ‘work shadow’ scheme which provides staff with the opportunity to shadow a colleague from another Team, discuss what their role involves and how they fit into the organisation as a whole. The aim of this scheme is to improve service delivery and engagement at the Trust by enabling staff to gain a better understanding how other Teams and colleagues work.
