Auto-enrolment

With effect from October 2012 employers will be required to enrol eligible employees (also known as jobholders) into a workplace pension scheme and make an employer’s contribution towards the scheme. This is known as auto-enrolment.

These reforms will be introduced over a period of four years, starting in October 2012. This extended timeframe is known as ‘staging’ and each employer will have a specific ‘staging date’.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

For employers with less than 50 staff members:
At the end of November 2011, the Government announced changes to the way in which employer staging dates will be introduced.

If your organisation has less than 50 employees, it is likely that your organisation’s staging date will be delayed by around 12 months – and will not happen until after the end of this parliament. The staging date tool has been updated to reflect these changes and aims to provide you with an indication of your organisation’s likely staging date following these changes. Once full information is available, we will provide a further update to the staging date tool.

As your actual staging date will be based on your number of employees at 1 April 2012, we would advise you to check your organisation’s staging date again after this date.

For employers with staff members between 50 and 250:
At the end of January 2012, the Government announced changes to the way in which employer staging dates will be introduced.

If your organisation has employees between 50 and 250 employees, it is likely that your organisation’s staging date will be delayed slightly. The staging date tool has aims to provide you with an indication of your organisation’s likely staging date but the actual date may vary following this announcement. Once full information is available, we will provide a further update to the staging date tool.

As your actual staging date will be based on your number of employees at 1 April 2012, we would advise you to check your organisation’s staging date again after this date.
