The Role of the SHPS Committee
The Committee meets four times a year, usually in Leeds; additional meetings are scheduled if required. The responsibilities of the Committee are:
- to monitor the administration of The Pensions Trust;
- to ensure the benefits provided by the Scheme comply with legislation;
- to ensure the Scheme is financially secure;
- to make necessary changes to the Scheme to comply with legislation;
- to monitor the investment performance of The Pensions Trust;
- to receive the actuarial valuations and accounts for the Scheme.
Sub-committees deal with items like employers joining or leaving SHPS, investment de-risking, and appeals from members against decisions on complaints. Working parties are set up as required to deal with specified topics - a recent example is assessing employer covenant. Committee members are expected to participate in sub-committees and working parties so the time commitment can be higher than four committee meetings might suggest.
